Ruakarekare – Soundwaves
15th March – 9th April 2014
Following the Christchurch earthquake, which destroyed his city studio, artist Rua Pick relocated to the small town of Coalgate in the Canterbury foothills.
From his new studio – Puawananga – he has spent the past 3 years creating Taonga Puoro, traditional Maori sound instruments in wood, bone, stone, shell and fibre.
In this current series of mixed media artworks he has painted stories within the sound instruments shapes & also within the sound influencing shapes of Taonga Puoro, such as insects & birds.
This exhibition is homage to both the sound & instrument makers of Taonga Puoro.
The exhibition opens at 2pm on Saturday 15th March.
